UCR is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in personnel decisions and has initiated a number of procedures to implement that policy. In addition, UCR is committed to affirmative action to produce desired increases in the numbers of under-represented minorities and women in the faculty and staff, as well as the disabled veterans (special disabled veterans, Vietnam-era veterans, and any other veterans who served on active duty during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized.).

The Office of Faculty and Staff Affirmative Action addresses questions and concerns regarding equal employment opportunities for women and minorities, and affirmative action in employment at UCR. The Office is also responsible for developing and maintaining an Affirmative Action Personnel Program Plan that outlines the ways in which UCR will work to achieve the most diverse pool of candidates for open recruitment that occurs on campus. As a federal contractor, UCR is required to have this plan. But beyond our legal requirements, UCR is dedicated to working towards achieving racial and gender diversity in all areas of campus life.

Each academic year the Chancellor, in conjunction with the Office of Faculty and Staff Affirmative Action, issues a letter to all members of the UCR community summarizing campus policy and objectives with respect to all affirmative action concerns, both those required by law and those undertaken voluntarily by the campus.

The recruitment and selection of a highly qualified faculty lies at the heart of the UCR's affirmative action program. The Campus Affirmative Action plan emphasizes safeguarding the excellence and integrity in our recruitment, selection, and appointment processes.

Affirmative Action Office Responsibilities are:

  1. Development, implementation, and maintenance of the Affirmative Action Plan, to ensure compliance with existing governmental and university regulations.
  2. Advising faculty, administrators, and staff on:
    1. Current federal and state laws and related regulations on Affirmative Action. Also advising how the Campus may best comply with these governmental requirements.
    2. Recruitments of applicants; training, promotion, and retention of employees to achieve racial and gender diversity, as required by the Affirmative Action Plan. Also working with other UC campuses, and state and local communities to promote affirmative action objectives.
  3. Monitoring campus progress and preparing reports on employee affirmative action. Maintaining statistics on labor force, employee work force, training, recruitment, promotion, separation, with breakdown by gender and ethnicity for reporting purposes.
  4. Working with faculty, managers, supervisors, and staff employees, as necessary, to mediate grievances based upon alleged violations of affirmative action policies contained in the Affirmative Action Plan.
  5. Advocating, and supporting campus activities which promote diversity, women's issues, minority issues, cultural awareness, career development, and other issues covered by the Affirmative Action Plan.
